Hummingbird Summersweet is prized for its intensely, spicy-scented, bottlebrush-like flowers that appear in mid-to-late summer. These 2-6″ flower spikes are creamy white. They attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators to your garden. Their green foliage matures to a golden yellow or orange in the autumn. Hummingbird grows well in shady areas, preferring moist, acidic soil and even being tolerant of clay soil.
Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) are versatile, native shrubs. They are known for the fragrance of their late-blooming flowers. They are one of the few shrubs that bloom in shade. They should be pruned in the late winter or early spring. Summersweet prefers moist to wet, acidic soil, making it ideal for woodsy areas or spots with poor drainage.
